    Lemel Johnson, School of Business

Lemel Johnson’s mom did the most unselfish thing a mother can do…she let her son go. She knew he wasn’t built for the dishwasher factory in Kinston, NC. He had bigger plans. After high school, she sent him to New York to live with his grandparents, and find himself.

He got to work. First in a gym and, later, in the mailroom of a Manhattan law firm. The jobs were small but his drive was evident. One of the lawyers was a Monroe professor who told Lemel he needed to get a college degree. He researched Monroe’s business program and decided to apply. Each morning he hopped a train from Harlem to Wall St. for work, did his class reading at lunch, then headed up to the Bronx for classes from 6 to 11 pm. It was grueling, but it paid off. He graduated with a business degree in only three years.

Afterward, he headed back to NC at a time when the economy was also going south. Undeterred, he networked and got an interview with a woman who worked for the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) in Washington DC. It was entry-level, but it was a start. He grabbed it.

Today Lemel is an OAR Budget Analyst, responsible for overseeing billions in government appropriations to over 25 Institutes and Centers at the NIH in the DC/Bethesda area.  He loves his work and all the good it does. And when he’s not crunching numbers in the office, he’s doing a little addition at home…with the arrival of a brand new baby girl. He’s hoping he’ll be as good a parent to her as his mother was to him. We have no doubt.
